Admit it. All this talk about grandfathered grooves and pre-1990 clubs has you thinking, doesnt it Youreotormally the kind of golfer who would go and bend a rule -- youre a stand-up sort, one whos on the up-and-up, square dealer, that sort of thing. But every so often, you find yourself casting your eyes over toward the dark side of the street, wondering what it would be like to wander over there. What if you just decided to dabble in someonconforming-but-technically-legal wedges You know, hypothetically speaking. How much would it cost Just for curiositys sake, of course.Heres the rub: its less than youd think.Head on over to ebay and check out some of the pre-1990 Ping Eye 2 models which are, technically, still legal. Some will only set you back a few bucks; of course, those are the ones that look like theyve been dragged behind someones car. Others, which have "buy itow" prices in the high hundreds, look like theyve been sitting in a garage for a couple decadesow. And somebody heard the commotion about these Pings, decided to take a look at their own stash, and realized they had a grandfathered gem right there in their own dusty bag You can imagine them thinking theyve uncovered the golf equivalent of a Declaration of Independence in an attic. But the truth is, theyreot exactly selling all that fast, mainly becauseobody besides pros has to worry about this groove thang anytime soon. Still, it might be worthwhile to go out and pick up a set just to be on the safe side -- you know, if you happen to qualify to play in the U.S. Open this summer. Dont be surprised, though, if "FIGJAM2010" snipes you on every bid. On Monday at the Bob Hope Classic, Tim Clark stood in the fairway at the par-5 18th, tied for the lead, 231 yards from the pin, with a chance to reach the green and potentially two-putt for a go-ahead birdie. And within a few minutes, he was standing in the bridesmaid spot yet again as Bill Haas birdied to win the tournament. Thing is, this isnt the first time Clark has taken the easier road. Matter of fact, the guy has a habit of playing it safe. How safe This safe: • Bubble-wraps his teeth before every meal.• Has only listened to one song in his life: "Sailing" by Christopher Cross. Heard it, liked it, figured music couldnt get any better than that, so its the only one on his iPod. And its on repeat. And shuffle, for some reason.• Plays prevent defense on Madden when he goes up 3-0.• Takes the road more traveled.  • Always bets on the Globetrotters. Or would, if he actually gambled.• Still holding onto that Enron stock "just in case they bounce back." • Black doesnt clash with anything. White doesnt clash with anything. Look at what hes wearing.eed We say more • Saves and boils his bathwater for reuse. Youever know, the world may run out of water.• Lays up on the windmill hole at the local Puttin Patch. • Keeps an entire stable of women on retainer just in case the current one doesnt work out. Oh, wait,o, that wasnt him. • Just gives cash for birthdays and Christmases. Yep, hes one of those. • Votes once for every American Idol contestant to make sure hes keeping things fair.Ah, well.
